THE KIDS HAVE GROWN, and so have the grandkids!
You’ve said goodbye to a career that has provided you with regular activity and social interaction, and this is the point in life when far too many people think, “now what”?
We are now living on average another 20 years longer but too many of our senior citizens are waking up each morning wondering why they should bother to get out of bed - with nothing to look forward to and nobody to share with. This can be a very lonely and isolated time in our life, and there is a real risk of falling into depression.
Senior Citizens’ Clubs were established to promote physical and mental activity to maintain health into our later years -  but after talking to members of the Long Jetty & District Senior Citizens’ Club, it became clear to me that real value is also found in the friendship and social interaction the club provides.
Companionship is one of the most important things members find at a club - and many of them emphasise the friendly, family feeling they receive. An typical example of this (not to mention the inspiration she is to all) is Breda Kelly, 89 years, from The Entrance, whom I met whilst doing the Tai Chi class. She later confided that her next goal was to balance on one leg!
A veteran table tennis player who was looking for something new, Breda decided to try Tai Chi, and made the following comment about the club: “We are one big happy family here and I strongly advise anyone feeling lonely and depressed to join their local seniors club. You’re never too old to learn and everyone needs friendship.”
A wide variety of low cost activities are offered at the Long Jetty club, including Tai Chi, bowls, yoga, table tennis, darts, handcrafts, dance, and computer courses - just to name a few. They also hold lively discussion groups where members are encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions on various issues. Computer classes offer varied topics ranging from basics to digital photography, and small class sizes allow everybody to receive individual attention. The Tai Chi class is also wonderful for maintaining health by re-energising both body and mind. The club is a place where you can go and chose your own level of involvement in a friendly and comfortable atmosphere.
Regular day trips and an annual ‘getaways’ are also provided. Special occasion events are a lot of fun and members look forward to them with much anticipation. Upcoming events include a Melbourne Cup luncheon (1 November), Christmas Concert (1 December) and a Christmas Dance on 16 December.
Long Jetty Senior Citizens Club is a happy, welcoming group, who enjoy meeting people and are always keen to share what they have with new members - a philosophy of “the more the merrier!”

With over 1000 members, some traveling from as far as Morriset and Umina, this club’s happy family is growing, and invites all people over the age of 50 years to join in and become involved as part of the Seniors Community.
Whether you are looking to try new and stimulating activities or just meet new people and enjoy a friendly ‘cuppa’, there is something here for everybody.
